The GoldenPass-Line is one of the most outstanding railway lines connecting the well-known places of Lucerne, Interlaken and Montreux. This trip presents an insight for the traveler into the life and culture of the country. The GoldenPass trains run several times a day all year round, and so the traveler may board and re-enter and get to know different people, languages and mentalities on both sides of the 'Röstigraben'. Take your time, it`s worth it .. Our guide accompanies you on this exciting journey of discovery. The attractive and traditional route with the GoldenPass Panoramic trains takes you from Lake Lucerne to Lake Geneva. From Lucerne you cross the historic sites of the Obwalden region, climb Brünigpass on a section of gear drive, continue towards Lake Brienz, follow its shore to Interlaken and then continue along Lake Thun to Spiez and through Simmental to Zweisimmen. From Zweisimmen, the GoldenPass line meanders through the river valley of the Saane to the world-famous resort of Gstaad. Through the Pays d'Enhaut and Gruyère country, the route takes you over the ridge of the Vaud Prealps passing the Rochers-de-Naye and then descends to Lake Geneva and the town of Montreux.

The origins of the city of Lucerne date back to the 8th century, when the monastery of St. Leodegar was founded. Since 1332 Lucerne has belonged to the 'Swiss Confederation'. The main attractions are the picturesque old town with its historic 14th century town houses, Chapel Bridge - also dating from the 14th century-, Old Town Hall at Kornmarkt, historic Wine Market and “Hofkirche” St. Leodegar. Lucerne presents a number of museums to the visitor including the Rosengart Collection, the Richard Wagner Museum and the Swiss Museum of Transport.

The railroad line from Lucerne to Interlaken was constructed in several sections between the end of the 18th century and 1916. From 1942 on the track has been passable for electric locomotives. The main station of Lucerne, an important railway junction in Switzerland, was rebuilt in 1991, after the old station was destroyed by a major fire in 1971. The main portal of the old Art Nouveau railway station could be saved and stands out as an archway on the station square today. Passing the picturesque small lake Wichelsee, the route reaches Sarnen.

The route leads uphill through sparse coniferous forest and passes the mountain crest of Kaiserstuhl, which separates the Sarner Valley and the 200 m higher Lungern Valley and Lungernsee with its water glimmering in green. Guide GoldenPass-Line - Brünigpass
Brünig Pass separates the cantons of Obwalden and Bern. The railway line culminates at 1008 meters above sea level with rack sections on both sides. Previously, the steam locomotives had to be turned around at the highest point of the pass.

Built in 1899, this nostalgic cable car with its faithful copy of the original wooden car goes high up in the air. Not far from the mountain station, three viewing terraces offer a breathtaking view of the waterfall and Haslital. For Sherlock Holmes fans, this excursion is compulsory: Here, the detective challenged his arch-enemy to a final fight - the violent scuffle ended with his fall into the roaring depths of this waterfall!
Cable car - Reichenbachfall Bahn![]() Not far from Meiringen the valley station of the Reichenbachfall cable car is situated at 600m above sea level. With a distance of 707m, it goes high up with a difference in altitude of 244m with a gradient of 617‰. The mountain station is located at 844m above sea level at the top of Reichenbach Falls, which became famous by the novel character of Sherlock Holmes created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Reichenbach Falls is a 300m high cascade of seven waterfalls in the course of Reichenbach creek. Its thunderous waters showed the way to the engineers when they constructed the rails for a cable car in 1899. Right next to the wild stream and the mighty Reichenbach Falls, the nostalgic cable car with its faithful copy of the original 24 seats wooden car goes upwards. |

A private train runs from Meiringen to Innertkirchen. Shortly after Meiringen, the train reaches the Aare Gorge, which is bypassed with the help of the approximately 1,500 m long Kirchettunnel. At the exit of the Aare Gorge eastern tunnel station, travelers may make out an imposing glacier mill and a suspension bridge across the river.

With a distance of 7.6km, the steam cog railway climbs up to the mountain station Rothorn Kulm at 2,244m with its magnificent 360° panorama. The one-hour drive passing the station Planalp at 1341m above sea level always offers changing impressions and fantastic views.

The opening of the railroad company took place on June 17, 1892 and until 1914 the steam trains regularly went up to Brienzer Rothorn during the summer months. At the outbreak of the First World War, the operation had to be stopped and could not be resumed until 1931, after 16 years of shutdown. In the meantime, the Brienz Rothorn Bahn had become the only steam cog railway in Switzerland, all others had been electrified. In the years to come the value of the Brienzer Rothorn Steam Cog Railway has been recognized and appreciated. Today, it is a vivid reminder of the bygone era of steam engines. Directly from the train station, the track rises steeply uphill through a bright deciduous forest, tunnels with viewing windows and coniferous forest before arriving at Planalp station. From Wilderswil Station at 584m above sea level the nostalgic railway follows a seven kilometer route up to Schynige Platte at 1987m above sea level; the trip takes 50 minutes. The mountain offers a beautiful view of Interlaken, Brienzersee, Thunersee as well as the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau Region. The railway carriages with their wooden benches dating from the 19th century are reminiscences of bygone times. The Schynige-Platte-Bahn (SPB) in the Bernese Oberland is a cog railway with a track width of 800mm and works with System Riggenbach-Pauli. The route was opened on June 14 1893 and electrified in 1914. The locomotives from those days have been in daily use up until today. The approximately 9 km long rack railway of the Jungfrau Railway leads from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch. The tunnel stations Eigerwand and Eismeer allow an overwhelming view of the cliffs of the Eiger North Face, the Männlichen, the Bernese Oberland and Eiger Glacier. The terminus Jungfraujoch at an altitude of 3,454 m is the highest railway station in Europe known as 'Top of Europe'. Visitors to the 3,471 m high Jungfraujoch can expect a unique high-alpine landscape.

Bahnreiseführer GoldenPass-Line - Schilthorn Bahn
First, a cable car takes the travelers to the mountain station Grütschalp and opens the view to the opposite side of the valley with the village of Wengen, Kleine Scheidegg pass and the mighty peaks of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Now another train follows the steep slope of the Lauterbrunnen valley to Mürren. From the valley station of the Schilthorn cable car, the cable car takes you to 2,970m high Schilthorn in about 30 minutes. The magnificent view out of the cable car is surpassed by the unique 360° panorama on the summit with a view of the entire Jungfrau Region.

Since 1912, the trains have been rolling on this 13km long route from Zweisimmen to Lenk in the upper Simmental. Once it was planned to continue the train via Adelboden through the Engstligental to Frutigen, but this was not put into effect.

The famous chocolate train starts in Montreux and takes the traveler to the Gruyère region, where the fine Cailler chocolate and of course the Gruyère cheese come from. Exclusively first class in 'Belle Epoque' Pullman cars from 1915 and / or in modern panoramic cars, the trip first goes to Gruyères to visit the picturesque town and the cheese dairy. The cog railway up to the 2,042m high Rochers-de-Naye, the distinctive mountain of Montreux, follows its track across the middle of the old town and the former village of Les Planches with its narrow streets. The route offers beautiful views of Lake Geneva and Chillon Castle. After passing some woodland, the panorama opens up to the west in the direction of Swiss Jura and the surrounding mountain peaks. Alpine Garden, marmot park, mountain and rock restaurant as well as original Mongolian yurts await visitors at the mountain station.

The route to Les Pléiades runs across the suburbs of Vevey, overlooking the beautiful park of the Baroque castle of Hauteville. Passing through St. Légier-La Chiésaz, the route meanders uphill past the mighty Blonay Castle, through sparse forests and along lush alpine meadows. Les Pléiades offers an overwhelming panoramic view over Lake Geneva and from the mountains of the Mont Blanc region and the Savoy Alps to the Swiss Jura. In May, wild daffodils transform the meadows into an ocean of white flowers.

From Vevey you can take the funicular to Mont Pélerin. Crossing the vineyards of the Lavaux, the train first reaches the picturesque wine-growing town of Chardonne and then passes the 15th-century castle on its way up to the mountain station at the foot of Mt. Pélerin. There you have to walk another 200m up to the foot of the observation tower with its panoramic elevator. The view 'Plein Ciel' from the platform of the tower pays for the effort.
